What to Do After a DUI Charge
Turn to a Denver DUI Defense Lawyer
It can be difficult to know what to do after you have been arrested, especially with law enforcement officials giving you unsolicited advice or asking questions. Hiring a lawyer immediately after you are charged with a first-time or repeat DUI is of the utmost importance. I am one of the most experienced Denver DUI and criminal attorneys, and I lead the Law Offices of Joseph A. Lazzara, P.C. with the utmost care and respect.
Time is of the Essence in a DUI Arrest
Unfortunately, if you are unsure of what to do when you get a DUI and wait too long, you could risk losing your license for an extended period of time or losing evidence that could effectively add to your defense. With more than 25 years of legal experience, I am a well-recognized trial lawyer in Colorado. I care about seeing that my clients are fully informed about your DUI charge and want you to know what your options are for defending against that charge, regardless of the circumstances at hand.
What Should I Do After a DUI Charge?
In order to prevent jeopardizing your case, you have a very specific time frame to work with after a DUI charge, especially when it comes to issues involving your license. You only have seven days to request a hearing if you have had a chemical test refusal or if you blew above .08 in the Breathalyzer. If your blood test was over the legal limit, you will get a notice from the Colorado DMV. You will need to respond quickly, because if you miss that window of opportunity to request a hearing, your license will be revoked for at least nine months.
A few steps that you should take after a DUI arrest include:
- Exercising your Fifth Amendment right to stay silent
- Take notice of any violation of your rights during the arrest
- Ask to speak to an experienced DUI defense lawyer
